The War on Terror
In Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm, the SEALs trained Kuwait's Special Forces and were able to use them to free the capital city from the forces of Saddam Hussain and other terrorists. They also aided in Operation Praying Mantis which attacked the Iranian territorial waters. In more recent times, the SEALs have greatly aided in the War on Terror being fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. They performed many missions after the September 11 attacks including Operation Redwing. The mission failed and was considered the largest loss of life in SEAL history until the Afghan Chinook Shootdown in 2011. Only one, Marcus Lutrell, survived the mission and wrote about it in his book The Lone Survivor. In 2011, the SEALs were a major part of the execution of the plan to capture al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. SEAL Team Six is said to be mostly responsible for this success along with others from the Marines, Navy, and Army.
